Car Hire - Top Tips

When you are hiring a car there are many things to look out for these top tips may be helpful in avoiding additional unexpected costs.

The first tip is that you should always read all of the terms and conditions of your car hire contract meticulously. Not all companies are the same and terms and conditions will vary widely. Check the terms and conditions for any extra charges you may incur for children's car seats or extra drivers on the vehicle.

When you pick up the car carefully inspect the outside for any scratches, dents or tyre wear and mark them clearly on your inspection document and notify the car hire firm before leaving. Then once inside the car make sure you check the petrol gauge, if you have paid for a full tank of petrol then make sure you have a full tank of petrol. The next thing to do before you drive off is to be clear on what the insurance and excess policies are. Some car hire firms allow you to pay more so that the excess is reduced to zero, however, you may still be liable if you return the car with a chipped windscreen or excessively worn tyres. Check that if you are going to be driving the car in another country, i.e. when in mainland Europe, you are fully insured for every part of your journey. Before leaving the car hire firm check that you have all their details and any emergency details required if the car should break down or you are involved in an accident.

One simple tip that may escape your mind when ordering your car is that you need to ensure that the car is big enough for those who will be travelling in it. Remembering that when you leave the airport you will have all your passengers and all their luggage or pushchairs if needed making the car required bigger than one for everyday running around.

When you have finished your trip and need to return your hire car then make sure you are aware of where the car is to be returned to, this may be different from the place you picked it up from. Make sure that you are not in a rush to get your car returned and yourself checked in for a flight as you will need to make sure that the car is returned correctly and any documentation signed and any issues are dealt with. Most car hire firms will not be happy if you return your car later than the agreed time and will probably charge you for an extra day of car hire. Once you get back home remember to check your bank account to make sure that the firm has not made any additional unauthorised charges on your account which may appear as the car hire firm or for example as car hire Mahon airport if you had been to Minorca.
