Stress Free Travel

Family holidays can be a stressful time and can often leave you feeling like you need to take another holiday to recover from one! However, it doesn't need to be like this - with a bit of planning everything can go without a hitch so everyone can have a good time.

A good way to start is to pick the right location to go to and arrange all your flights, accommodation and car hire in good time. Many airlines do have last minute offers or better prices if you go at odd times of the day or night, but if you plan to do this it is probably worth staying in a hotel close to the airport so you aren`t dealing with overly tired kids.

Making sure you come equipped is a good idea too, you might not mind or get bored with travelling, but children can get mischievous when bored. Bring a favourite toy for reassurance and something to do. For teenagers usually a mobile phone or video game will keep them occupied, but for smaller children you might need to be a bit more creative without bringing the whole house out with you. A little book, some pencils, paper and perhaps a couple of well chosen toys will help - do try to consider your fellow passengers and don`t bring anything too noisy though!

Packing a snack or two and planning for toilet breaks is another good tip. There are plenty of travel games to play like I-spy or 20 Questions that can keep you all amused. If you see a tantrum brewing then try and distract the child by pointing out something to look at or with a toy. If you can then get small children to have a nap - sleeping children are generally easier to deal with after all!

Another good way to manage everything is to make lists - this will ensure that you don`t forget to pack knickers or nightclothes and will hopefully mean you don`t forget passports or other important documents - or even money. If made in plenty of time then you can tick everything off before you go and know you don`t need to worry about things.

Check and double check all your arrangements ahead of your visit. Call hotels to make sure they have high chairs for instance, book tickets to events or parks to avoid disappointment and check with your airline about seating, waiting times and anything else, which may cause a concern.

Although organising car hire is probably best to do ahead of time, thankfully it is also very simple and stress less to arrange car hire at UK airports. All major companies have a desk and someone to advise you on the best choice for you. The most important thing to remember is to take a few minutes for yourself when you can - if you do this you are less likely to get irritated and out of sorts and it can make all the difference on your family holiday.
